Happy Thanksgiving.

Posted November 24, 2005
The proverbial greeting will be exchanged today between friends and family and perhaps total strangers if their paths happen to cross.

We at KinstonPress.com wish everyone the best of days and we hope all take time to reflect on the day and its significance.

Maybe you are thinking what's to be thankful for in a year plagued by national disasters and domestic controversy.

Plenty we say. Remember, those who see the glass half full, rather than half empty are reputed to live longer.

As members of the fourth estate we are thankful to live in a country where freedom of speech and of press is protected by our Constitution. We are grateful that technology makes it so much easier to exercise this privilege. Most importantly, we are grateful to those in uniform, both past and present, whose sacrifices have protected this and all our freedoms.

A Wednesday evening national newscast focused on the holiday in New Orleans saying many will sit down at unfamiliar tables with unfamiliar faces as the Thanksgiving meal is being provided by a number of volunteer organizations. The citizens of New Orleans and the volunteers who serve them are probably unaware they are re-enacting the first Thanksgiving when the Pilgrims and the Indians feasted together and set the foundation for our modern day traditions.

Thanksgiving is truly the most American of all holidays. We do not have to search the history books to find its roots in some European celebration; nor do we have to be reminded of wars we would prefer to forget.

So today , sometime during the feasting and the fellowship, we plan to reflect upon and blessings and not our roadblocks; and in doing so may we all try to focus on the threads that weave us together and not the scissors that cut us apart.
