A 38-year-old Kinston man is in critical condition after being stabbed early Thursday morning.

Police say Michael Waters flagged down two acquaintances near Tripps Tire on Old Snow Hill Road and East Highland Avenue about 2 a.m. Thursday. Waters asked for a ride to his sister's apartment in St. John's Village on East Highland Avenue.

The men gave him a ride and did not realize Waters had been stabbed until they reached the sister's home.

The friends called emergency services, Kinston Public Safety Cmdr. Greg Thompson said.

Waters was taken to Lenoir Memorial Hospital and later flown to Pitt Memorial Hospital. He was listed in critical condition after surgery.

Police have little information on the case, Thompson said.

The type of weapon used to stab Waters has not yet been identified, and investigators don't know the motive behind the stabbing.

Police had been unable to talk with Waters as of late Thursday afternoon.
