Pizza delivery man attacked, robbed

Police consider gang involvement

A 19-year-old pizza delivery man received minor injuries Monday night when he was attacked by five men.

Brian Jones, a delivery man for Domino’s Pizza, 2301 N. Herritage St., was making a delivery at 807 Jackson Lane, in northeast Kinston, at 7:45 p.m., when he was attacked and robbed by five young black males, Kinston Public Safety Comdr. Greg Thompson said.

The robbers escaped with six pizzas and about $40 in cash.

Jones was treated and released at Lenoir Memorial Hospital. He was unable to give officers a detailed description of his attackers.

Chief Greg Smith last month cited the neighborhood where Jones was attacked as one that is seeing increased gang activity.

“We do have gang activity in the Jack Rountree (Apartments) area,” Thompson said. “It is a possibility that this was gang-related. When you’ve got five young black males attacking a delivery guy, it shows some concerns.”

In August 2005, a pizza delivery man was robbed and shot twice. The suspect was arrested and convicted, Thompson said.

Investigators are hoping someone saw the robbery and can provide more information by calling Crime Stoppers at 523-4444. All calls are anonymous.
