Special to KinstonPress.com

Posted: 11:30 PM EST Friday March 10, 2006

“Earning the Right to Citizenship-II” is the second regional symposium of the Black Heritage Society, scheduled for March 24-26, in New Bern at the Sheraton New Bern Hotel & Marina.

The symposium is co-sponsored by the Cultural Heritage Museum and the African American Civil War Society. The following organizations have been invited to participate as partners: Tryon Palace, James City Historical Society, N.C. Black Storytellers and the New Bern Riverfront Convention Center.

There has been a recent resurgence of interest regarding United States Colored Troops and their involvement in the Civil War in North Carolina. In response to this, the Cultural Heritage Museum is planning its second regional symposium on African-Americans who participated in the Civil War’s military units. The regional conferences are sponsoring presentations, discussion papers and exhibits, from which evidence emerges about the participation of African Americans in the Civil War.

Expert speakers will participate in eight seminars to examine the latest information and research on African Americans in the Civil War. Re-enactors from the 54th Massachusetts, 37th Regiment USCT, Battery “B” 2nd Regiment USC Light Artillery and the 9th and 10th “Horse” Calvary Association of the Buffalo Soldiers will conduct living history demonstrations. Local and state tourism officials will highlight the economic impact of Civil War tourists to North Carolina and how to use African American Civil War History to enhance tourism development.
