In a close final round of the 2005 Public Library Quiz Bowl, only 10 points separated the two top teams, a match that was spirited until the end.
But at the last it was Arendell Parrott Academy students who topped the South Lenoir High School team, taking top honors and the opportunity to represent the area in the district Quiz Bowl in Rocky Mount on March 25.
Parrott team captain Bryan Brooks was jubilant at the win, despite this being his third Quiz Bowl appearance. Brooks is a senior this year and this was his final Quiz Bowl competition.
He complimented Kinston-Lenoir County Public Library staff members on the way the event was handled.
“I’ve been to the district bowl and they’re a lot better organized here,” Brooks said.
This was South Lenoir team captain Eric Loftin’s fourth Quiz Bowl. “I had a lot of fun,” he said, grinning from ear to ear, despite his team’s second-place finish.
Students were asked questions in science, literature, current events and sports categories. Parrott team members said the sports questions were the most difficult for them.
A couple of this year’s teams were hampered by conflicting events. At Bethel Christian Academy, for instance, this was the weekend for students to make college visits. The school had a four-day weekend and many students who did not visit colleges and universities were out of town for other activities.
The Quiz Bowl is an annual event. This year it was sponsored by the Friends of the Library, Bojangles and The Free Press.
