Fire at KHS weight room

From staff reports
Posted: 2:20 PM EST Wednesday February 1, 2006

A fire early Wednesday morning damaged equipment in the Kinston High School weight room.

The room is in a concrete block building separate from the main school.

Kinston Assistant Fire Chief Bill Johnson said a 911 call at 7 a.m. alerted firefighters to the blaze. No one was in the building at the time. Students usually begin arriving at the school about 7:30 a.m.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but Johnson said nothing about the blaze appeared suspicious.

The building’s roof most likely will have to be replaced, Johnson said, as well as some of the equipment, such as foam cushions on weight benches. Free weights might need sandblasting, but can be salvaged, he said.

No one was injured during the incident.
