Neuseway prairie dog gives weather forecast

Animal is Kinston’s version of groundhog
From staff reports

Keep that long underwear out – winter’s not over (although some people doubt that it’s even begun yet).

“The groundhog saw its shadow, so it’s six more weeks of winter,” Bobby Cox, overseer at Neuseway Nature Center, said.

The groundhog Cox referred to is Puxatawney Phil, the nation’s most famous groundhog, who lives in Pennsylvania.

“I just saw it on television,” Cox said.

He had to get the news from TV because the nature center doesn’t have a groundhog, also known as a woodchuck.

“We’ve got a prairie dog,” Cox said. “They’re a close relative of the groundhog.”

The nature center’s prairie dog saw her shadow, if that counts for anything.

“She comes out, runs around a little bit, lies down, goes to sleep, gets up, runs around a little bit, lies down and goes back to sleep,” Cox said.
