Chamber president resigns suddenly

Cites "medical reasons" as cause

Paula Walls, president of the Kinston-Lenoir County Chamber of Commerce, has resigned. Wells submitted her resignation Wednesday morning after being in the job since Oct. 1.

"I left for medical reasons," Walls said. "I offered my resignation and they accepted it. When you deal with medical problems you deal with them the way you have to, not always the way you want to."

Her departure was sudden. On Tuesday, Walls, who lives in Greenville, spoke to the Kinston Board of Realtors monthly meeting and told the group she was looking for property in Lenoir County. Walls, as part of her employment contract, was required to move to Lenoir County. She told a reporter only days earlier that she was looking for a house in the county.

Former Lenoir Community College President Joyce Cherry will be interim president until a permanent replacement is found.

The resignation was announced one day before the chamber's board of directors was scheduled to meet.

Walls succeeded former chamber President Bruce Parson, who left to accept a job as economic development for the Global TransPark. Parson's seat was filled temporarily by Nate Vause until Walls was hired.
